How do you dress properly for the job interview? What kind of dress looks good? How do you know what you should or shouldn't wear? This article provides five tips on how to dress properly for the job interview.

Tip 1: Look Inside

Take note of the style of attire for existing staff members. You may get a feel for this by visiting the company's premises and/or visiting their website.

Tip 2: Dress Professionally

Ultimately, you want to dress professionally. You can use the standard of dress that existing staff members wear to determine what would be considered professional for this company. Then you pitch your own standard of dress to match or slightly exceed the company's existing standard of professional dress. After all, it is an employment interview. You would be expected to be wearing your best attire.

Tip 3: Prepare Your Outfit the Night Before

You are then in a position to prepare your outfit the night before your job interview. You can lay out your clothes. As you do, you can check that each item of clothing complements the remaining pieces. You can also check your shoes to make sure there is no scuffing and polish them if need be. Finally, you can check to make sure that there are no loose threads, no holes, no lint and no stains in any of the items of clothing you intend to wear.

If you are accessorizing your outfit with items of jewelry (such as earrings, necklaces broaches or clasps), favor items that are petite and of good quality. You do not want any items of jewelry that jingle, jangle or detract interviewer attention from your face, and ultimately, from the words you speak.

Tip 4: Prepare Your Materials and Accessories

While you are at it, the night before may be a good time to prepare any materials, notes, handouts you might like to bring with you to the interview. You may like to bring them in a nicely presented folder or a briefcase. You may consider packing your materials in the sequence you feel you may naturally draw upon them. Alternatively, you may pack them in a logical sequence that makes sense to you. Either way, you need to pack your materials in a way that you know you can find everything quickly when you need them.

If the weather is forecast for cold or rain, you may like to select a professional coat and or umbrella that will enhance the professionalism of the rest of your outfit. Once again, you will want to make sure that these items are also in good condition. Thus, you will want to check your coat does not have any loose threads, lint, holes or stains. You will also want to check that your umbrella works the way intended.

Tip 5: Before You Leave Home.

On the day of the interview, you can then get dressed without any fuss. You can check your appearance in a full-length mirror to ensure that you look good and that your outfit is sitting well on you. If you are carrying a coat, be sure to drape it along your left arm, so that your right arm is free to shake hands upon arrival. Similarly, If you are carrying umbrella, be sure to carry it along your left arm.

And for the rest, be sure to smile at your reflection in the mirror, take a deep breathe and you can go to the interview, knowing you are putting your best foot forward.
